#RookieOfAtlanta Interview w/ @1RobOlu
1. Where are you from?
- I was born at Kennestone hospital(Marietta,GA) but I've lived and grown up in Kennesaw, a small suburban city North of Atlanta .
2. How were you introduced to rapping?
- 1st grade . I went to school and we had a lesson on poetry, rhyming, etc and I fell in love. I couldn't stop rhyming after I learned how, it blew mind. My older brother also played a lot of different music around the house so I guess those two factors played a big part in my life musically .
3.What era of music influences you?
- Id have to say the early 90's to 2000's. Groups like NWA, Public Enemy, & Kriss Kross, dared me to be different and taught me how to be comfortable in my own skin despite the risk of being shunned or treated differently because I'm not following "social norms" .
4. What drew you to hip hop?
-My brother was a really big fanatic. He would always cop the new albums and whenever I was around him that's what would be playing.
5. What was the first song that you wrote?
-Lol, I can't remember but it was in 8th grade during MySpace days. I made a lil' farewell track for the homies and shones that I wasn't going to see in high school.
6. What was the experience like when you first recorded in a studio?
-Shitty. In their opinion, I wasn't the best at making music at the time so I wasn't taken as seriously nor did I get as much attention or energy during my session . Shit definitely changed now though . Ha
7. Were you always interested in music?
-Not necessarily music, but performing publicly . I used to dance at all the talent shows when I was younger, so that's where the passion derived from .
8. Your family is Nigerian were they accepting of you and you wanting a career in music?
-Definitely . My mom is my biggest fan. It's been that way since day one. She never saw me put so much time into anything else. She saw the dedication and been down since.
9. What type of beats do you like?
- I have no preference . I've been looking for some "trap-influenced boom bap", but I'm starting to think it doesn't exist :( . I like everything, if it grabs my attention and I can make a cool song for my fans I'm down for the challenge .
10. How long does it take you to record?
- I'd say about 2-3 hours for a song . Idk if it's long or not I just know Patt(engineer) be heated lol . I'm my biggest critic, so shortcuts aren't acceptable . If I can barely hear a mistake the fans/audience will hear it 10x louder .
11. How do you feel about the indie Atlanta music scene?
Man , it's dope as fuck . Everyone's so open minded, down to hear everyone's shit, and down to come together for these events. I haven't come together personally with any of the artists here, but time is of the essence .
12. Is it important for artists to have more a street presence or an internet presence nowadays?
Both are critical, but to each is own. My opinion is unbiased, both are just as important as the other.
13. What do you think listeners get from your music?
- "He can rap" "Damn, this song is cool" "I've been through that!"
14.What are your visions for your songs?
- I let the beat tell me how to deliver a song based on how it touches my emotions .
15. What is YakoPack?
- A family . Composed of photographers, graphic designers, beat makers, engineers and musicians .
16. What do you bring to the game?
-Robert, and NedYako .
17. Anyone besides your team you want to collab with?
I'm a big fan of Allan Kingdom and his camp so that'd be pretty dope. Grande Marshall would be sick too .
18. Is what your doing now going to benefit you 10 years from now?
- Hopefully . I know I'm not doing this shit for no reason.
19. What is your legacy going to be?
- A multitude of timeless records and great music .
20. Do you have a project dropping soon?
- "The Wayve" is my next project to be released through NedYako and Fried Family , produced in its entirety by in house Great Gwami (@greatgwami) . Release dates haven't been finalized, but expectations can be set for mid to late June .
21. What experiences in life have made you who you are today?
-Appreciating the gift of patience . Sometimes things don't always go exactly as I expected, but that's kept me grounded for a while now especially with "The Wayve" and dealing with a lot of confusion in that area.
22. When everything is said and done what do you want GOD to say to you?
- "Welcome"
