This installment of Rookie Of Atlanta interviews I got a chance to do one with CreamxCartel artist MauieTheKing. The Morehouse student tape "Mixed Feelings" hosted by DJ J-1 has just dropped. This is our FaceTime interview.
1. Where are you from?
- Atlanta but I lived in Philly and London for a while.
2. How old were you when you decided you wanted to rap?
- Probably like 3 or 4, I was listening to real rap like Jay- Z and Andre 3000 from an early age. If it was possible I wanted to do it.
3. What was the first hip hop song you knew from start to finish?
- It was Eric B and Rakim's "Paid In Full"
4. How did you get with CreamxCartel?
- It's not something you get into, it's more something we started. We all went to Grady High School together, it was two groups that we combined and got CreamxCartel. It's not a brand that's something I want people to know.
5. How did you figure out your sound?
- Everything I do is organic I don't try to sound different. I just love music.
6. Your mixtape "Mixed Feelings" how did you come up with that name?
- The self identity of a black male in this country in the media is so hard so that your music has to be hard or gangster. I'm not hood or suburban. I just wanted to show a different side.
7. What's your favorite track off the tape?
- I actually modeled the tape off a album so I don't have a favorite track.
8. How long did you work on the tape?
- A whole year.
9. Does having a team behind you help you musically or not?
- I'm the CEO of both my companies and my own team K.Austin so yes it does help it funds my music.
10. What was the first bar you ever wrote?
- I don't remember but I know I freestyled over N.E.R.D's "Maybe"
11. Does being in college help your music in anyway?
- No it doesn't. I hate school I do it for my mother.
12. What are you in school for?
- I'm in school for business marketing so I can know how to market my companies better.
13. If you had to stop rapping tomorrow and had to do one last collab with someone who would it be?
- Outkast they are from side of town.
14. Who are you?
- A 20 year connoisseur of music. I'm just a fan of all types of music. I just love music.
15. When everything is said and done what do you want GOD to say to you?
- Thank you for living life to the fullest.
